Sam Jonah is a Ghana-born businessman and Chairman of equity fund, Jonah Capital. As one of Africa’s most prominent businessmen and an internationally recognized leading executive, it is no wonder why other entrepreneurs in Ghana voted Jonah as Marcopolis’ fifth (5th) most influential businessman in the country.
Jonah was educated at Adisadel College in Ghana, Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall, and the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. His career began in 1969 at the Obuasi goldmine. At the tender age of 31, he became the deputy Chief Executive Officer of its holding company Ashanti Goldfields, and in 1986, was appointed CEO. Under his influence, the company became the first operating African company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 2004, Jonah reached the prime of his career when he managed the 1.48 billion-dollar merger between Ashanti Goldfields and AngloGold. Due to the union of these two companies, AngloGold Ashanti became the world’s second largest gold producer, with Jonah as its Executive President.
According to Forbes, Jonah’s estimated net worth is $600 million. He acquired most of his fortune through Jonah Capital, his investment company in South Africa that he is currently Executive Chairman of. This holding company and private equity firm makes investments in sectors across the board, including mining, real estate, agriculture, construction materials, oil & gas, and more.
As if his resume was not impressive enough, Jonah also is chair of the board of several companies, including Equator Exploration, Scharring Mining, Equinox Minerals, Moto Goldmines, among a few others. Furthermore, he also serves on various boards, such as Transnet, Mittal Steel, Standard Bank of South Africa, and more.
Jonah has been decorated with several awards and honors in his career. The Camborne School of Mines awarded him with an honorary Doctor of Science Degree, while the University of Cape Coast awarded him with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities. Moreover, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, conferred him an Honorary Knighthood in recognition of his achievements as an African businessman, leading executive, and international public figure. Jonah has also been the recipient of three Lifetime Achievement Awards.
