#7 - SMB (Société Multinationale de Bitumes)

Created on March 3, 1976, Société Multinationale de Bitumes (SMB) is the only producer of bitumen based in West and Central Africa. It has 2 units consisting of vacuum distillation and atmospheric distillation. The atmospheric distillation produces kerosene, total petrol, light gas, oil and residues. The vacuum distillation produces bitumes and light and heavy gas oil. The factory has an annual capacity of 520,000 tons of crude oil and can produce nearly 300,000 tons of bitumen per year.
SMB's traditional market includes Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Cameroon and Congo Republic. The company is in advanced talks to begin selling to Senegal, Mauritania and Guinea, and hopes to extend to Sierra Leone. As such, SMB expects bitumen output to hit 320,000 tonnes in 2017 as new contracts are signed.
