Top Energy Companies in Lebanon Electricité du Liban produced in 2008 10,221 million kWh. 867 million kWh were purchased and the electricity network consumption in Lebanon amounted to 12,227 million kWh. The electric power consumption rose in 2009 to 13,137 million kWh, according to a World Bank report. The report also says that the demand for electricity is very likely to reach more than 4,000 MW by 2015. This would require an additional 1,500 MW of new capacity. Lebanon is known for frequent power cuts, lasting sometimes more than 3 hours. This is happening due to soaring demand levels especially during the summer - from June till September. Lebanon has the highest number of power cuts and failures out of all countries in the region - more than Yemen, Syria and Egypt. As for 2008, 58,993 tonnes of liquid gas were imported to Lebanon. 1,263,155 tonnes of oil were imported by the Ministry of Energy and Water of Libanon for Electricité du Liban. Another 387,755 tonnes of oil were imported by the Ministry for the local market. 1,076,521 tonnes of fuel-oil were imported by the Ministry for Electricité du Liban. Future for the Lebanese energy sector looks brighter thanks to a planned usage of Liquified Natural Gas as an alternative fuel source. This plan should turn into reality by mid 2015. Also, Lebanon agreed in 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit on increasing the production of renewable energy in Lebanon. By 2020, the production should reach 12% of the total supply.
