According to the Global Information Readiness Report, Bahrain ranks exceptionally high in almost every category of ITC readiness on the Networked Readiness Index (NRI). Overall, Bahrain is ranked 29th (out of 133) countries—and 2nd in the GCC. On many individual portions of the Index, however, it is rated much higher; for example, Bahrain ranks among the 133 rated countries, as:

10th in ICT usage

11th in e-participation

15th in business-friendly ICT market environment

17th in government readiness

Despite the unrest, communication and transportation sectors continued to outpace the economy, growing at an 8.6% annual rate for the first half of 2011.

Bahrain's financial sector is sophisticated, consisting of a wide range of conventional (retail) and Islamic financial institutions and markets, including retail and wholesale banks, specialized banks, insurance companies, finance companies, investment advisors, money changers, insurance brokers, securities brokers and mutual funds.

Bahrain has 411 banks and other financial institutions, which includes 77 wholesale banks, 30 retail banks, and 27 representative offices. In addition, it has 27 Islamic banks. In January 2011, total employment in the financial sector was more than 14,000, with about 8,800 in banking, and the remainder in insurance, money brokering, and other financial services.

Overall, the sector contributes 27% of Bahrain's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), making it one of the key drivers of growth in the country.

Despite the diversification efforts Bahrain remains heavily dependent on oil and the oil prices. The income from the oil related business accounts for over 70% of government’s income.

Bahrain is planning to spend more than $20 billion in the next 20 years on developing its oil and gas sector, this would include an expenditure of $15bn on the development and modernisation of the Bahrain Oil Field and $5bn on modernising Bapco refinery.

This will increase Bahrain production per day to around 105,000 barrels per day (bpd).
